Welcome to the no spin zone! Here's my take on the draft. Who got steals, and who has me scratching my head. I'll give my take on who got the best VALUE for their pick.
First lesson is free folks
Round 1 Best: I think I got the best wrestler in fantasy with the 3rd pick. I don't fault the guys taking Ed and DT before me, however. Also, Kyle Snyder grabbing Ramos I view as a slightly better value than Willie taking Howe. Ramos probably an equal favorite to Howe with more bonus points. I think those were the most savvy picks of the round(any idiot takes Logan with #3).
Round 1 Worst: I'm not going to say Kendric Maple even though he hasn't looked great. I still view him as one of the bigger favorites to win a title, so I don't completely hate it. It's hard to find a bad pick, but I think Dunk grabbing Garrett was a big risk at the time. Especially considering how bad Delgado beat him last time. I like to be risk-averse in my early picks and I think as good as Garrett is, he's a huge investment that comes with some serious risk. The same can be said for Shearer taking Megaludis with the 11th.
Round 2 Best: Bob Shearer getting the returning National Champ (DSJ) with the 14th pick is pretty nasty. My favorite pick was possibly Steve Widzinski's selection of James Green with the next to last pick of the round. (23rd). I think Green is a title contender.
Round 2 worst: Scott Sakaguchi from Early. Yeah, that looks like revisionist history on my part, but Sakaguchi losing to solid guys is nothing new. He's not a title contender in my mind and has basically been the same wrestler his whole career. He will place, but I don't see him having the upside . Robert Kokesh from Brunetti as well. Yes, he's for sure a stud, but let's look at upside. Is he a title contender? Not in my mind. He's 1-3 against Evans. Never beaten Perry, certainly won't beat Howe. Best case scenario he's 3rd. He could wrestle well and get 6th. I just don't like the upside there.
Round 3 best: Steve Widzinski's pick of Gwiazdowski had that UPSIDE potential I love. HE's a title contender. Obviously, I love Cory Clark. Wins over Delgado, Sprenkle, Patterson, Boyle, Peters, Gilman as a TRUE freshman have me believing he can be very special. The best VALUE I think was David Early's pick of Scott Schiller. Is he a title contender? Assuredly. He's right there with Meeks, has wins over Gadson and McIntosh. Early got him with the 4th from last pick this round. Love it.
Round 3 worst: Eh, there's kind of a few I wasn't crazy about: Jarrod Patterson from Snyder didn't wow me. I don't think Jarrod can break through the top 4 of Jesse, Nico, Nahshon and Cory. Same with Herricks selection of Kraisser.
Round 4 Best. I mean...I love Morgan McIntosh this year. I think he's a title contender. So in my mind he was an amazing value for me with the 34th pick. I also really liked the Gadson pick from Widzinski a lot.
Round 4 worst: Tyler Wilps, and there's not a close 2nd. He was an EARLY round 4 pick. He's just an alright wrestler. No upside, and is in a tough weight. Losses to Veltre, Massa, Graham, Monk, Caldwell suggest he's not about to turn his career around. He's a fine wrestler, but there are tons of really nice options available, I don't think that's going to be a good return on investment for you Shearer.
Round 5 Best: A few I really liked: Jason Tsirtsis from Dunkelberger. In the instable world of 149, I think Jason brings a level of consistency, even as a Freshman that could suggest he could be a finalist or champion. I also really liked Snyder taking Dardanes. Of course I love Steinhaus. I think he's the clear number 2 to Ed Ruth this year. Velliquette looks mildly competent with his selection of Lofthouse late.
Round 5 worst: Probably the first pick, Evan Henderson. Yes, he is a likely AA, but he's number 2 in his conference to Carter, and he's shown to be well behind Nevinger, Port, etc. Don't see the upside there.
Round 6 Best: I loved the Isaac Jordan pick. He's in a brutal weight, but he's a monster. Good job by Tyler.
Round 6 Worst: Dan Yates from Velliquette and Cam Tessari from Shearer. Tessari is out 1st semester and was very streaky last year. He's in a worse training environment and his dedication has to be considered questionable. Yates is a very average wrestler.
Round 7 Best: Pretty big drop off here in talent. I liked Willie's pick of Bradley. Dude has wins over Demas, DSJ, Green, etc. I liked the Colon pick from Shearer too. If J'Den Cox is a 4 Time undefeated NC, I'll feel good about my pick also.
Round 7 Worst: I didn't care for Snyder's picking of Veltre. He's a solid guy(who has 2 wins over Wilps, a 4th rounder), but he's probably 7th/8th place guy best case. Looks like a R12 or worse guy to me.
Round 8 Best: I really liked the value of Medbery from Pletcher. He had a really nice Freshman season. Good athlete with great upside.
I like Nathan Burak this year, good job Dunk.
Round 8 worst: I didn't like the pick of Lambert from Widzinski. Comparable talent went much later in the draft. I wasnt crazy about the Collica pick with the risk being that he may not start.
Round 9 best: Lots of good sleepers here: Loved Gabe Dean from Widzinski, Downey from brunetti and Marsden from Willie.
Round 9 Worst: I'm a VA guy, but I'm not crazy high on Joey Dance this year. Doesn't have the leg attacks imo, and is not elite on the mat. Being an awesome athlete with great defense I think only gets you so far. Boaz Beard has been a symbol of mediocrity his entire career. So I was not crazy about that pick from Snyder there.
Round 10 Best: I have never been too high on David Thorn, but I thought it was pretty nuts value for him. I liked Brunetti's pick of Gulibon, I don't see anyway he doesn't start. Early may look like a genius with his Klimara pick. Big time Upside.
Round 10 Worst: Lee Munster is another very average guy. I thought there was some better talent out there. Maybe not at 174, but just talent in general. There's a lot of Lee Munster types available at 174. Didn't see the need to grab him then.
Round 11 Best: I mean, I pick guys because I like them for the most part. I loved Habat's upside in the 11th. He just beat Neibert and 149 after a few guys is a crap shoot. Velliquette may have gotten a steal with Vaith. In fact I'm pretty sure of it.
Round 11 worst: Honestly, no bad picks this round. They may not all pan out, but I think most guys took good value picks. Alexander, Avery and Miller have some questionable defeats, but the talent is there.
Round 12 Best: After this weekend i think David Early's selection of Adam Coon is a clear steal. Good job.
Round 12 worst: Shearer taking Smith with Coon on the board is going to haunt him I'm afraid.
Round 13 Best: Brunetti taking Dhesi looks smart already. He's a monster.
Round 14 worst: Bo Jordan. He's already wrestled 2 opens, he is 100% redshirting, and you have no idea when he will wrestle, which means you have no clue when to start him. Waste of a roster spot no matter how good he is.
Round 15 Best: Chris Mecate from ODU is really solid, as is Corey Keener. Good job by Brunetti and Dunk.
Round 15 Worst: Josh Demas from Nauman. He's really injured and is probably not going to wrestle this year.
Round 16 Best: Probably Dom Parisi. He's got some legit wins beating Garnett and Cox. He's a wild card but should be a conference champ with upside. Great value.
Round 17 Worst: Nathan Tomasello: Same as Bo Jordan. Nick you now have 2 guys who can't help you in the Post Season.
Other Musings:
Quite a few guys have 3 wrestlers at 1 weight. I don't understand this at all. Scoring points in the regular season is how you make the playoffs. When you go 3 to a weight at any spot, you minimize your scoring opportunities.
Steve has 3 157s.
Brunetti did this twice, at 133 and 141.
Herrick has 3 133's(Though his is probably because he's worried if Conaway starts) and 3 197's.
Willie took 3 197's
Snyder took 3 285's(though he's a family man, so I understand!)
Nick Velliquette has 3 141's and 3 149's, he also has 2 guys who arent varsity wrestlers. So..yeah.
All in all I was VERY impressed with the drafting. I picked on some selections, but the fact is A)those are my opinions, so take them with a grain of salt and B) None of the picks were all that bad.
Considering most of you are very new to this I was very impressed.
